AD/HD unfolds across the lifespan, with a
particular emphasis on functional impairment
2. Identify the various mental health conditions
and other deficits that commonly co-occur with
AD/HD
across development
3. Identify the best practice assessment methods
to address issues of differential diagnosis/comorbidity,
thereby enhancing diagnostic accuracy
4. Cite currently available evidence-based
treatments and comment on the importance of
using multiple
treatments in combination to address the multiple needs of
individuals withAD/HD
5. Gain insight into how the criteria for
diagnosing AD/HD may change in DSM-5

Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Social Workers,
Marriage and Family Therapists, Counselors,
Nurses, Physician Assistants, and other
professionals in the mental health and medical
fields.
Presenter:
Dr. Arthur D. Anastopoulos received a B.A. in
Child Study from Tufts University in
1975. From 1975 until 1977 he worked as a
Psychological Assistant in the Department
of Neuropsychology at Tufts-New England Medical
Center Hospital in Boston, MA.
Thereafter, he received his M.A. in
General/Experimental Psychology from Wake Forest
University in 1979, and his Ph.D. in Clinical
Psychology from Purdue University in
1983. As part of his doctoral training, Dr.
Anastopoulos completed a one year clinical
internship at the University of Oklahoma Health
Sciences Center, where he received
specialty training both in Pediatric Psychology
and in Cognitive Therapy. From 1983
through 1985 he served as a Staff Psychologist
in the Department of Pediatrics at the
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In
1985 he joined Bedrosian Associates, a
private practice group in Leominster, MA. From
1986 until 1995 he held a joint
appointment in the Departments of Psychiatry and
Pediatrics at the University of
Massachusetts Medical Center, where he also
served as Chief of the AD/HD Clinic
founded by Dr. Russell A. Barkley.
Dr. Anastopoulos currently is a Professor in the
Department of Psychology at the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro,
where he also directs an AD/HD Clinic for
children, adolescents, and adults. An active
researcher, Dr. Anastopoulos has been an
investigator on several federal and university
funded research grants, including an
ongoing 5-year NIH grant to study the genetic
basis of AD/HD in collaboration with
researchers at Duke University, as well as a
recently completed 2 year NIH funded
project examining college student perceptions of
stimulant medication abuse, again in
collaboration with Duke researchers. He
regularly presents his findings at national and
international scientific meetings and has
authored 2 books and more than 50 articles and
book chapters on the topic of AD/HD. Dr.
Anastopoulos has also given more than 200
invited AD/HD presentations to various parent
groups and educators, as well as medical
and mental health professionals. In addition to
research and training, Dr. Anastopoulos
sits on several editorial boards, conducts ad
hoc grant reviews for NIH, serves as the
clinical advisor to the recently created AD/HD
Support Group in Greensboro, and has
previously served as Director of Clinical
Training, Chair of the IRB, and Chair of the
Research Policies Committee at UNCG.
